This past weekend played host to the annual San Diego County Cup, one of the largest and most competitive youth water tournaments in the USA. Northwest Water Polo Club’s (Seattle, WA) 14u and 12u boys teams flew south Friday morning to attend the competition, fielding teams in the 14u AA bracket and 12u A bracket. Both squads battled hard all weekend against some of top teams from California, making some positive progression as they competed against some veteran competition. The tournament was highlighted by the 12u boys top ten finish (and some In-N-Out). 

​Friday’s first game had the 12s matched up against Lamorinda B (Lafayette, CA). After a nailing biting back and forth affair the squad came away with a 7-6 win. Saturday morning had NWPC facing off against Newport White (Newport, CA) and while the team played tough they dropped the contest 4-11. Against San Diego Shores Gold (San Diego, CA) the boys rebounded with a solid 8-4 win before they moved to face Carlsbad A (Carlsbad, CA). In their last match on Saturday the 12s played great, earning a 10-6 win behind some awesome teamwork. Sunday morning saw the squad playing for 9th place game against Poway Valley (San Diego, CA). Both teams put together a fantastic defensive effort and at the end of regulation time the final was 2-4 in favor of the home team. Over the weekend the 12s went 3-2 and wrapped up the tournament in 10th place. 

Northwest 14s had a rough first game on Friday, dropping their match against San Jose Express (San Jose, CA) 20-3. Saturday saw the boys rebound with a solid 11-5 win against Riverside (Riverside, CA) before squaring off against Lamorinda A. The boys kept the game close for a half but ran out of gas, dropping the contest 3-13. Game three on Saturday against South Coast Red (Thousand Oaks, CA) saw the boys find the back of the net more but couldn't quite keep up as the game wrapped up 6-13. In their last match on Sunday the boys put together a strong effort but came up short against Shore Aquatics (Long Beach, CA) 3-8. For the tournament the boys went 1-4 to finish in 22nd place. 

Congratulations to both Northwest teams on representing Seattle and Washington with some great effort over the weekend. NWPC teams will be back in action at a mini tournament June 1-3 (location TBD).
